Blackhawk Area Council is proud to host a 2011 Central Region Powder Horn training course.

Powder Horn is an exciting training opportunity designed as an action-packed, hands-on outdoor course to expose adult leaders and youth to the resources necessary to operate a successful unit level high adventure program and support the Venturing Ranger program.

Powder Horn adventures vary from course to course.  Your course will include many of the following:  Backpacking, Land Navigation, Cave Exploring, Leave No Trace, Communication, Life Saving, Conservation Project Development, Wilderness Survival, Cooking, Watercraft, COPE, Overnight, SCUBA, Physical Fitness, Ecology, Plants & Wildlife, Emergency Preparedness, Cycling/Mountain Biking, Equestrian, Shooting Sports, Expedition Planning, Outdoor Living History, First Aid, Mountaineering, Fishing, Winter Sports, Hunting, and Working with Teens. 

No one will be required to participate in any activity they feel uncomfortable with, but we will highly encourage you to participate in every activity offered.

Participant Qualification Requirements:

  • Adult requirements:
    o Must be trained for their position.
  • Youth requirements:
    o Must be 14 (or have joined a Venturing crew if 13 and finished 8th grade).
    o Must have completed their unit’s version of Leadership Training (Introduction to Leadership Skills - Troop or Introduction to Leadership Skills - Crew). National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is recommended (but not required).
  • All participants must meet the following requirements:
    o Must be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
    o Meet the physical requirements contained in the Annual Health & Medical Record physical in a backcountry environment.

Participant Fee:               $250.00 includes all meals, training materials,
                                       lodging and program supplies.
Course Size:                   Maximum of 48 participants (A standby list will be created,
                                      if needed. If this is the case, those participants that have
                                      paid the entire course fee will be registered prior to those
                                      who have made a partial payment.)

We expect this course to fill up fast.  Once 48 participants have signed up all others will be placed on a waiting list.

It is important to note that this is a hands-on, intense, early-morning to late-night schedule.  Many of the activities will be held outdoors even if the temperature is very cool.  All six days are required to receive your Powder Horn recognition.
